A section for boys under the age of enrollment as Cubs was first started in 1963 by the 1st Dromore Group in N. Ireland and was initially known as "The Little Brothers". Other Groups started up in Belfast. In 1966 (the year the Advance Party Report), the name "Beavers" was adopted along with details of uniform, age-range (6 to 8 years old) and basic organisation .
In 1974, the Section's name was changed to "Beaver Scouts" and in 1982, they were officially introduced throughout the UK, with the introduction of the new uniform (grey sweatshirt and turquoise necker with a maroon woggle - and optional jogging bottoms). On April 1st, 1986 the Beaver Scouts finally became an official section throughout the UK.
At first, the Beaver training scheme of consisted of just the membership badge and one other badge (awarded after the boy had been (active) in the Colony for at least a year). Many considered just one badge to be not enough challenge and interest.
In 1995, as part of a relaunch of the Section, a new badge scheme was introduced, with the single Beaver Scout badge being split into two halves (of six months each) and the introduction of a new Beaver Scout Challenge.
In about 1990, the option of replacing the turquoise necker with the Group necker; 1992 - (along with all other sections) the acceptance of girls. In 1995, the option for lodge coloured woggles instead of the maroon Beaver woggle.
In 2008, the Badge Scheme was further modified and now comprises: Joining In Award, Activity Badges, Staged Activity Badges, Partnership Awards, Challenge Awards and The Chief Scout's Bronze Award.
The 59th Sheffield (St Augustine's) Beaver Colony first met in 1988 with Stephanie Roch as BSL and Amanda Nielsen as ABSL. It has met on Tuesday nights ever since then.
