Following a change in the law in 1981, Woodseats Venture Scout Unit set up a local Christmas post delivery service, printing and selling their own stamps, collecting from various pick-up points and delivering throughout Sheffield (more or less).
St Augustine's Scout Group joined in from the start, in the first year sorting at Trippet Lane and then, as the project became bigger using the Group's Headquarters as a sorting office for postal areas S7, S10 and S11, receiving and distributing mail to the local Groups in those areas for delivery. Whilst doing the district sort, the Group was also selling stamps, collecting and delivering mail.
More about Woodseats VSU and the Sheffield Scout Post.
The Sheffield Scout Post continued until 2001. At its peak, the mail in and the mail out of the Group's HQ were each in the region of 100,000 items per year. To achieve this, the Group was backed up by a large number of parents and supporters, spending the tree weeks before Chistmas, selling, collecting, distributing, sorting, franking, delivering and going to great lengths to correctly deliver badly addressed Christmas cards.
