The Ash Collection

There has long been a connection between the Ash Family and the 59th.
Richard Ash is photographed at one of the earliest camps at Totley in 1918.
Richard was followed into the Troop by his brothers Donald and Jack. Donald became an Assistant Scout Master in 1930 and Scout Master in 1933. In 1936-37, Donald moved to Trinidad and in 1938 was appointed District Commisioner, North Trinidad. He subsequently went on the have a long and illustrious career in Scouting in the Carribean.
In 1936, he was made an Honorary Scouter of the Group and an Honorary Vice President in 1993.
Jack took over as Scout Master from Donald and remained in that position until 1952 when he became Group Scout Master. He retired from active leadership of the Group in 1958.
In 1959, he was made an Honorary Scouter of the Group.
Katie Ash (nee Sayles) (Jack's wife) was an Assistant Cub Mistress in the 1940s. A great supporter of the Group, she was was made an Honorary Vice President in 1991.
Jack and Katy had three sons, all of whom were members of the Group. Robert Ash was made an Honorary Vice President in 2005 and is currently Honorary President.
