Group History 1960-69

1960 The Senior Scout Den is opened at the rear of the Parish Hall
The Senior Scout flag is dedicated
The Senior Troop comprises 14 members, all of whom hold the First Class Badge
The Group's first Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award is awarded to J R Markham with the Certificate being presented at Buckingham Place[30400]†
1961 Five First Class badges are awarded in one year
The Homestead, Hope becomes the 59th's official Camp Site.
Long trousers become alternative wear for Senior and Rover Scouts(1)
1962 The first issue of the Groups magazine "Stumps" is published [5100] [5200] [5300]
At their camp at Homestead, Hope, the Rover Crew are accompanied by a group of Borstal Boys
The Sheffield City Scout Association rules change and Scout Divisions cease - the 59th is now in Rivelin District
K Atkin is appointed ADC Rovers (Rivelin) and T Mounsey is appointed ADC Cubs (Porter).
1963 £42-7-6d is raised by the Group during Bob-a-Job week (Equivalent to £797.32 in 2013)
Group strength is now 87. Due to high numbers, the Pack is closed to new members.
The Group successfully negotiates with St Augustine's Church, the use of the site of the tennis courts behind the vicarage for the building of a new Group Headquarters (Botanical Road). The Building Fund stands at £300 (£5049 (2013)). The anticipated cost of the new HQ is £3,500 - £4,500 (£59,000 - £76,000 (2013))
Outline Planning Permission is granted for the Group's new Headquarters
The Senior Troop wins the first ever Rivelin District Westbourne Cup Competition
The cost of the two-week Summer Camp at Yeo Farm, Chagford in Devon is £10-10-0d (£176.71 (2012))
As Queen's Scouts, R Markham and G Jackson attend the National Parade at Windsor
1964 The Senior Scout Troop reaches its highest ever membership - 16
Four Queen's Scout Badges are awarded within 12 months
A fund raising dance is held at the Locarno Ballroom (now Sainsbury's at the junction of London Roadformerly Tiffany's night club) "with a personal appearance by Jimmy Crawford and the Chantelles"
Visit by the Cub Pack to Bramall Lane to watch the Yorkshire v Australia cricket match (Result: Draw)
1965 The Group's 50th Birthday Celebrations take place
The Group's Queen's Colour dedicated
A Group Garden Party is held on the HQ site on Botanical Road
Three Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards are won.
The Group wins the Rivelin District Swimming Gala Group Trophy for the fourth successive year
G Jackson is awarded the Royal Life Saving Society Diploma (the first in Sheffield)
1966 Plans for a new HQ are approved under Town Planning and Building Regulations and building work commences
The first Trustees are appointed for new HQ - A L Sands and E S Dungworth
A Building Team for new HQ is appointed
Wolf Cubs Golden Jubilee Year
1967 W A Unwin is appointed GSL
During the year, the Group Chairman, Group Secretary, Scout Leader, Senior Scout Leader, Rover Scout Leader and Group Scout Leader resign. New appointments are made to the Group Committee
Chief Scouts Advance Party Report published - Senior Scouts and Rover Scouts are to cease.
Venture Scouts are introduced
Changes in uniform for all Sections
Implementation of a new training scheme

The 59th's Senior Scout Troop and Rover Crew end
Group members meet the Chief Scout (Sir Charles Maclean) at Hesley Wood

1968 In June, BBC Radio Sheffield visits the new HQ site
No Scout Summer Camp takes place but some Troop members attend the 36th Ranmoor Summer Camp at Grassington as a separate Patrol
The Cub Pack celebrates its 50th Birthday
J Swithinbank wins the Rivelin Booths Pot Competition
The Group's first Chief Scout Award (to replace First Class) is awarded to J Swithinbank
