Welcome to the Archives of the
59th Sheffield (St Augustine's) Scout Group

At 7.30 pm, on the evening of Friday 4th of December, 1914, under the leadership of Scoutmaster Mr J S Butler, in the Parish Rooms of St Augustine's Church on Wiseton Road, the 59th Sheffield (St Augustine's) Scout Troop held its inaugural meeting. The Troop comprised two Patrols - Ravens and Cuckoos - thirteen Scouts. By Friday, 22nd January 1915, the Troop had grown to three Patrols and twenty-two Scouts.

Since then, the Troop has become a Group, with, over the years, Beaver Scout, Cub Scout, Scout, Senior Scout, Venture Scout and Rover Scout sections. Over a thousand young people, both male and female, and hundreds of adults, both leaders and supporters, have, in the last hundred years, been involved in the Group.

This website aims to use the Group's archives to present a history of the Group over that period in a manner that stimulates the memories of those involved with the Group, both past and present and satisfies the curiosity of passing visitors.

There are a number of ways to explore the site. A good place to start is with the History by Decade, which works through to the present from that first meeting in 1914. Alternatively, for those with memories of their time in the Group, why not visit our constantly expanding Image Collection. There are also a number of Personal Memories of early years in the Group - if you have your own then please contact us.

New material is constantly being both unearthed and received for the archives. Consequently this website is regularly updated - so it is always worth another visit.
